NICOLA CONTE
INTERVIEW FOR BIGGERBOUNCE.com

YOU MUSICAL TASTES ARE LARGELY INFLUENCED BY JAZZ, CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS PASSION?
It is hard to rationally explain a passion, it is something that grows inside of you until it is so huge that
you just embrace it. Jazz music was slowly planting its seed inside of me in a particular time of my life, between college
and university. Also all of the influences I had around me, the books that I read and the movies I was watching.
It was through jazz that I found myself, something that could best represent me.
AFTER MANY YEARS CONTRIBUTING TO THE MUSIC SCENE WHERE DO YOU SEE THINGS GOING
In THE FUTURE?
This is something I really don't know, the thing is its not important to forsee this sort of thing, for me the
most important is what I want to do and how loyal can I be to my art. Art is very much a lonely walk into nowhere, therefore
its something very hard for an artist to forsee as the artist is always a step ahead.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR TO FOR INSPIRATION WHEN MAKING MUSIC?
First of all what happens everyday in society is a very big inspiration. I look at words and I look inside myself.
I have my own perspective and I like to be in touch with what is going on so sometimes music is influenced by suggestions of
how I feel about a certain issue. Also as you get older you have a greater connection between past and present so your views
are more concrete.
TO THE NAKED EYE AND GENERAL PUBLIC YOU ALWAYS APPEAR In A VERY CLASSIC ITALIAN MANNER.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I grew up with a very traditional education, very old fashioned. My father always had an eye for a certain kind of
clothes. Also it relates back to jazz because its part of the movement, jazz relates to a period when the style was expressing
certain things. Also clothes are just an extension of who you are so as you grow up you start to get a feeling about yourself.
YOU HAVE PLAYED In PORTUGAL BOTH AS A DJ & In A BAND FORMAT, HOW DO YOUR GIGS HERE COMPARE
WITH OTHER COUNTRIES?
There are no major differences between one country and another after all when a concert or dj set happens
it is bound to create an atmosphere, an emotional exchange between the artist and the audience, becoming one at this particular
time. So if you are good enough to establish this kind of exchange then it's the same in every place. Its all about the feeling,
if you as the artist don't feel it then its not going to happen, music is an international language.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU In THE NEAR FUTURE?
I am working on a new album which should be released later this year.
JAZZ MUSIC HAS INFLUENCED MODERN MUSIC PRODUCTIONS FOR MANY YEARS, DO YOU FEEL JAZZ IS
SOMETIMES UNDERVALUED?
Its not undervalued but the market imposes a certain attitude towards music so all creative music is regarded
as dangerous because creative music implies a different understanding, it also implies that each and everyone has to think
with his own head. This is no good for the market, they want it to be linear, one thing for all. This is not freedom,
jazz is very much about freedom, about human beings. Human beings should be put back at the front, technology is just a
vehicle to express what we can do with it and not the opposite. So jazz is very much the spontaneous intervention of human
beings, it has no rules excpet the ones you impose yourself. What we are trying to do nowadays is express jazz music in a
different way in an attempt to bring it back to what it used to be and reach a large audience.
IF YOU WERE NOT INVOLVED In MUSIC WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN?
When I was very young I wanted to be a jet pilot.
